Finding Peace in the Chaos

I’m certain that most Americans are greatly disturbed by the chaos that is erupting in many of the major cities in our country. We need to be reminded that God hates chaos, as it was out of chaos that He brought order during what we call “creation week” as recorded in the opening chapters of the Book of Genesis.

I’m also reminded of what the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth,

“God is not a God of disorder, but of peace” (1 Cor. 14:33).

God is a God of order, not chaos, and order brings about peace. Those who intentionally sow discontent and chaos in any civil society are acting in direct opposition to the purposes of God.

And so, how can we find peace in a society where chaos seems to be running rampant? Let me provide some help from God’s Word. Keep in mind as you read, the following verses not only provide points of assurance, but also exhortations for us to follow through with action. Although I could provide many other points, I have chosen only three. Here they are:

  • DON’T FEAR

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10).

  • DON’T WORRY

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

  • REST IN GOD’S PEACE

The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace (Psalm 29:11).

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).

In the midst of the chaos that seems to be engulfing many cities in our country, let’s all find comfort in knowing that God is with us, serving as our Anchor in difficult times, providing peace when the world seems to be crumbling beneath our feet. Let’s all keep our eyes focused on Him and trust that, even in the midst of chaos, our Lord has promised to see us through any difficulty. In addition, let’s all be praying for law and order to be restored in those cities and communities where chaos is present and people live in fear.

Let me close with these reminders from the Apostle Paul:

Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

May the Lord bless each one of you today, and be at peace.
