From Darkness to Light

I think that we would all agree that it’s tough walking around in the darkness. Getting up in the middle of the night without a “nite light” to guide us can be a precarious experience as we try to navigate through the maze of various toe-stubbing obstacles that can cause us to stumble. At the beginning of creation, it was darkness that was “…over the surface of the deep,”only to be later dispelled by the invasion of light (Gen. 1:1-3). But, of course, darkness is not only a natural phenomenon, but also a spiritual one.

Jesus spoke of humanity as “…loving the darkness rather than the light” (Jn. 3:19).When recounting his conversion experience, the Apostle Paul said that the Lord called him “…to open the eyes of those who are blind so that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the dominion of Satan to God…” (Acts 26:18).That’s why the Apostle Peter could say to all those who know Christ, “…He has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:9). So, we are probably asking, “Just what is this light?”

Actually, the answer to this question is not a “what,” but a “who.” At the beginning of his Gospel, the Apostle John says of Jesus, “In Him was life, and this life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, but the darkness could not conceal it” (Jn. 1:4-5).Jesus possessed “LIFE” in His very being, and this “LIFE” became a beacon pointing mankind to the truth. Interestingly, Jesus said that in addition to possessing “LIFE” in His very being, He also possessed “TRUTH.” Jesus said it plainly, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn. 14:6).In other words, the LIFE that Jesus gives us points us to the TRUTH, which points us back to Jesus.

During His ministry, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life” (Jn. 8:12).Realizing that His death (and following resurrection) were coming soon, Jesus told His disciples, “For a little while longer the light will be among you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you…. While you have the light, believe in the light, in order that you may become sons of light” (Jn. 12:35-36). This is why Jesus could say to His disciples, “You are the light of the world,….Let your light so shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Mt. 5:14-16).

Jesus calls each of us to leave the darkness and enter the light. He is the LIGHT who points us to spiritual truth. And because He is also “TRUTH,” the LIGHT simply points us back to Jesus. If we seek Jesus, we will not only find “LIFE,” but also “LIGHT” and “TRUTH.” If you have been walking in spiritual darkness, not knowing where you are going, look to Jesus who said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Mt.7:7). So, what are you waiting for?

30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?”

As was the case with the Ethiopian eunuch, not understanding what he was reading, we also need someone to help us understand what we are reading. Nice job Jim.
