This passage of Scripture is what I often call “The Gospel in a Nutshell.” Here is what the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth:

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance; that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Let’s take a few moments to unpack what Paul was communicating to these believers, and of course, to us also. First, he is letting them know that the truths embodied in what followed were received from the Holy Spirit as inspired truth, and what he received was being passed on to them. Furthermore, Paul considered the following words to be of “first importance,” that is, of “primary importance” because it summarizes the message of the gospel.

Second, Paul makes the bold statement that “Christ died for our sins.” We call this “The Vicarious Atonement,” that is, knowing that we were unable to do so ourselves, someone else had to pay the price for our sins, and that was Jesus Himself. And Paul says that this truth was clearly revealed in the Old Testament Scriptures, and I suspect he was pointing to the prophetic truth revealed by the Prophet Isaiah:

But he was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Third, Paul goes on to say that after His death on the cross, Jesus was “buried and raised on the third day.” So often we tend to focus on the cost of Jesus’ death on the cross (as we should), but we cannot forget that paying the price for our sins had to be confirmed by Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. And that truth was also found in the Old Testament  Scriptures, specifically in the Book of Psalms:

“For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; nor will You let Your Holy One see decay” (Psalm 16:10).

So friends, this is why I refer to this verse as “The Gospel in a Nutshell.” And it is one of the verses that I encourage all of us to commit to memory. And of utmost importance, we must also realize that when Jesus died for the sins of the world, He also died for my sins and for yours. If you have never done so, please take a moment to respond to the words of the Apostle John, which includes an exhortation as well as a promise:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
